Dave Swart
Senior Rail Specialist
Dave Swart brings more than four decades of experience in heavy haul rail operations and bulk logistics. During his career at Transnet, he held senior leadership positions on major corridors, including the Iron Ore and Manganese lines, where he was responsible for managing high-volume freight operations, large-scale infrastructure projects, and operational optimisation initiatives.
He has been closely involved in several milestone achievements for South African rail, including the successful operation of record-setting trains such as the 660-wagon iron ore train recognised by the Guinness World Records, and the longest production train in the world at 375 wagons. Dave also played a key role in expanding rail capacity through the design and implementation of satellite operations centres, multi-user loading facilities, and innovative train length and loading cycle optimisations.
His leadership and contributions have been recognised with multiple industry awards, including Platinum and Gold at the Logistics Achievers Awards and the African Transport Operator of the Year Award. Across his projects, Dave has consistently delivered measurable improvements in throughput, efficiency, and safety while helping shift bulk freight from road to rail, reducing both costs and environmental impact.
At Innovaliq, Dave applies his unmatched operational knowledge and project management expertise to help clients reimagine and transform their bulk logistics systems, ensuring strategies translate into execution and measurable results.
Johan Venter
Lead: Systems Design & Solutions Delivery
B.Eng Civil
Johan Venter is a multidisciplinary railway engineer with a strong track record in rail system integration, infrastructure strategy, and capacity optimisation. Over the past decade at Transnet, he has contributed to several national rail and port initiatives, focusing on aligning long-term demand and capacity planning across South Africa’s key bulk corridors.
He began his career in Transnet’s Projects and Engineering division, where he was seconded to Aurecon to support the Waterberg Expansion Feasibility Study and the ECOWAS Railway Network Interconnections Master Plan. These early roles strengthened his foundation in cost-benefit analysis, conceptual railway design, and transport economics within complex regional systems.
Since then, Johan has progressed into a senior technical leadership role within Transnet’s Corporate Centre, leading decision-support modelling, lifecycle costing frameworks, and corridor optimisation strategies. He played a key role in the Ore Corridor Restoration Programme, driving technical integration and recovery planning to stabilise and enhance national freight performance in collaboration with industry partners.
Johan’s expertise spans railway engineering, capacity analysis, lifecycle costing, and systems engineering, underpinned by strong analytical and communication skills. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Pretoria and has completed the Senior Leadership Development Programme through Wits Business School and The Performance Agency.
At Innovaliq, Johan applies his analytical precision and engineering insight to help clients translate technical complexity into practical solutions that enhance logistics efficiency, infrastructure reliability, and long-term value creation.
